at the right you see jim demint, a guy the late tim russert once said i can't believe jim demint is a senator. he is the leader, the ramrod of all those right wing challenges. he put up ron johnson to beat mitch mcconnell because he's too liberal. he's leaving, quitting his senate seat, giving it up, to run the heritage foundation. we have other stuff coming up, but let's start with that. >> first of all, he's going to make a lot more money. ed fuelner, who is leaving, makes $1 million a year. demint has a net worth of $40,000. secondly, the leadership has tried to rein him in. they've said, you can't go out and go after these conservative republicans with really conservative republicans in primaries because you're setting us up to lose senate seats. now that he's out of there, he can become a kind of cross between grover norquist and the jim demint he always was. he can drive these hard right ideas, but he can also sponsor hard right candidates in republican primaries. i think he thinks he's going to be more important at the heritage foundation than he is in the senate. >> let me ask you abo

of pearl harbor. reaction continues this morning over yesterday's resignation announcement of jim demint. the approach and fiscal clift deadline continues to loom over congress and the white house. that is where we want to begin. is it ok for leaders to compromise, or should they stick to their principles and would it be ok if doing so sent us over the fiscal cliff? give us a call this morning. you can also catch up with us on all of your favorite social media websites. a very good morning to you. i want to begin with the question of compromise or sticking to principle. this is a question a gallup organization asked in a recent poll. it found 62% of americans would like to see the federal government leaders compromise on an agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff budget measures set to go into effect next month. more than twice the 25% who want leaders to stick to their principles. a majority of all party groups favor compromise. here is the breakdown from the gallup organization. 71% of democrats say they want a compromise bursa's 21% who say the party should stick to their principles. amon

the day then. we just got this breaking news that senator jim demint is going to leave the senate in january to become the president of the heritage foundation. demint had been holding boehner's feet to the fire on these tax cuts. what's your reaction to that and this on the heels of reports that boehner is getting strong backing in the house? >> let me start with senator demint. he always has seen himself as a movement conservative. i think what he thinks is he can make a much more significant and much more impactful difference outside leading this movement, ala at the heritage foundation. the heritage foundation has always been an incubator of ideas. moving on to speaker boehner, this is a good thing that he has his caucus behind him. i remind you and the audience that has not always been the case. a lot of tea party folks and other folks have never trusted speaker boehner but they've given him a lot of leeway given the fact they're united by this overall principle that they should not raise taxes on small business owners. >> shouldn't it mean that you should stick out your term

the soldiers. it's been a tough, long, hard war. but, madam president, i met with jim demint this morning and to say i was stunned was an understatement. jim indicated to me that he will be retiring from the senate next year and taking over the presidency o of the heritage foundation, one of the great conservative think-tanks here in washington. my reaction for the people of south carolina is you've lost a great, strong, conservative voice, someone who has championed the conservative cause and represented our state with distinction, sincerity and -- and a great deal of passion. on a personal level, i've lost my colleague and friend. jim and i've known each other for almost 20 years now and i think we've done a pretty darned good job for south carolina. at times playing the good cop, the bad cop, but always -- always trying to work together. and what differences we've had have been sincere, and that's the word i would use about senator demint. he sincerely believes in his cause. he's a -- he sincerely believes in his causes. he's a sincere voice that people in our party look to for leaders
